Old School House, Maentwrog, Snowdonia
Even if this exceptional roof, with its small banded slate designs, had
qualified for grants the only solution would have been to strip and re-lay
with conventional 20" x 10"s slates (which would also have destroyed
the lathe and plaster between the revealed rafters in the interior of
A comparison of the photos will show the detailed work that has been
done: new cast iron gutters and downpipes; fleur de lys ridge tiles (on
the dormers only cost was prohibitive for the main ridge); straightening
out the line of the main ridge; painting and repair of all bargeboards;
replacement of fascias; new leaded valleys; all finials removed, repaired,
painted and replaced; very extensive structural repairs to the tower (which,
upon close examination, proved to be in imminent danger of going walkabout)
and finally the re-painting of the tower.
All work was done without conventional scaffolding rope access
techniques used as required with huge cost savings to the client.
St. John's Church, Worksop (Grade 2 listed)
For this contract we competed against quotes of: around £45,000
(+ VAT + scaffold costs) for re-tiling with artificial reconstituted slate
or around £64,000 for re-slating. Savings of around £30,000
on re-tiling and around £48,000 on re-slating.
St. John's Church, Worksop
Small house conversion near Blaenau Ffestiniog, North Wales
This house was in a state of imminent dereliction. Even though part of
the roof (lower front half) was too far gone and needed re-slating, the
client still had well over 50% savings on re-slating and was delighted
to end up with a roof that combined function with character.
Bryn Teg, Dolgellau, Snowdonia (Grade 2 listed)
Bryn Teg is a listed building with a roof that was in exceptionally poor
condition and almost beyond salvation. It worked out at possibly the most
expensive job we have ever done per square metre at around £35,
but still cost less than half the cost of re-slating with new slates.
Scaffolding costs were also saved.
